It has been said time and time again that consistency creates success.

But if it’s really as easy as it sounds, why aren’t all restaurant owners wildly successful?

Think back to a time in your life when you achieved some form of success – whether it was in academics, in sports or in business. Maybe it was acing a big exam, winning a coveted trophy, or exceeding a sales target.

In the time leading up to that successful moment, you most likely made an intentional decision to commit yourself to achieving that goal. Perhaps you studied every day for a week before the exam.  Or regularly trained with your team before the big game. You were determined to remain consistently persistent and do whatever it took to win.

So what’s stopping you from applying that same diligence and determination into your daily routine today?

In the restaurant industry, where consistency is more difficult to find than a unicorn, that’s exactly what you need to be to find success. No, not a unicorn… consistent!

Consistency can mean the difference between success and failure for your restaurant. Among other things, being consistent lets you hold your team accountable and effectively measure how you’re doing in various aspects of your business.  Setting aside time daily or weekly to meet with your managers, for example, makes them feel good knowing you’re attentive to their challenges.  In addition,  they know you’ll be following up on any deliverables they’ve committed to.

By being consistent in your actions, you can motivate your team to consistently deliver results.

Over the past 16 years, I’ve worked in and helped open a number of restaurants across North America. One thing I’ve found is that the same routine I created for myself and my managers at the beginning of my career is still a useful tool for creating consistency – with a few tweaks here and there – no matter the restaurant.
